Auto insurance in certain Southern states, such as Georgia auto insurance, is not unlike across the country. For a fact nowadays, keeping auto insurance coverage on a card that has been registered and is being operated out on the roads and highways is mandatory in all states. Additionally, each state has worked are known as mandatory minimum levels of coverage that must be maintained.
These mandatory minimums are set by the laws in each particular state, and can range from relatively small amounts of coverage – mainly involving personal injury protection and personal liability – up to relatively hefty amounts, though no insurance expert says that the mandatory minimum level of coverage in any state should be the level that a person is recommended to carry.
Georgia mandatory minimum levels as dictated by state law come in at what the state calls 25/50/25. This means that a person registering and then operating a vehicle in the state must have at least $25, 000 of body injury coverage per person injured in the accident and at least $50, 000 of body injury coverage for two or more people injured in the accident.
Additionally, there must be at least $25,000 of coverage account for any property damage done in the accident. As was said, however, these are minimum levels and most people should seriously consider carrying higher levels of coverage for various reasons. The main reason will, of course, be that the chances of higher costs incurred in an accident are usually fairly certain.
Most insurance experts recommend that at least $100,000 in property damage liability coverage be maintained. People are also advised to increase their levels of personal injury protection and personal liability coverages up to amounts approaching the same figure. This is only smart and sound thinking and it usually doesnt cost much more to add higher levels.
It isnt mandatory that proof of insurance be carried in the automobile that is being operated on the roads in Georgia but it is highly recommended. Besides, it will come in handy should there be an accident and a police officer or investigator asks about insurance. For those who are operating motor vehicles that have liens on them from a lender, it will also be a sure bet that the lender will mandate insurance coverage.
Georgia auto insurance, as was said, is not much different than auto insurance in any other state. Georgia will also find those who allow a lapse in auto insurance coverage. There is only a 10 day window in the state before fines start kicking in, either way. The state will also suspend the registration until coverage is reinstated and fines are paid. Driving on a suspended registration is a misdemeanor punishable by law.
